NOTES, PREPARATIONS, WHILE READING THROUGH SMITHSON.
A while ago, it seemed obvious that actually the whole lost idea of poetika (descriptive, never prescriptive), could be taken up, just to make temporarily explicit what 'new' means within a contemporary context. (see Rabinow for further comments on the notion contemporary).
LANGUAGE
The role of language is an important one, and can be seen as almost procedural, for developing a score, a plan, for diverting the methodological approach, to explicitly force one to break away from the usual steps one is taking while walking... language is the first element that can break the idea of the disciplinary, by polluting the other materials and activitities, by an unasked mixing in of letters and words in images and sounds... another issue is the idea of the unfinished and fragmentary...
SITE STUDIES
The idea of the non-site, and nature non-nature leads to a deeper interpretation of fluidity, and the resistance to the singular, the simple, and work with the direct presence of time, space and any other given physical forms...
THE ARTIST'S FIELD OF ACION
This is a question, and points to the limitations of the former biological and humanistic models we are all using; we need (1) to expand on these models in content and materials, (2) to act against the egotistic in the arts, and explore more collective ways of creation, (3) to work against 'pure' artforms as we pointed out above, (4) to transcend the organic and humanistic but away from the spiritual and metaphysical
TIME
Time itself as well the ultimate primordial theme as the ultimate primordial medium, but reflected in tangible material from reality, for instance like geological time is discovered in the deepness of the surfaces, prividing almost a window (okno) on time itself...
So the artist's field of action becomes the "temporary" in which we can stretch/shrink, inflate and compress time notions... time is ideological... distance becomes the conscious devoid of self-projection, or the artist as an anti-hero... (see also the description of distance and the 2nd order involvement by luhmann and rabinow)
CONTRADICTION PARADOX IRONY REVERSAL
"... an art against itself is a good possibility, an art that always returns to essential contradiction" (again the unfinished and fragmentary, as in an early unexpected death), to abandon things, create ambiguity and (1) make transgressive breakdowns and (3) create multiple boundaries and hierarchies, finally (3) no a-priori!
THEORIES
"... theories like things are also abandoned. that theories are eternal is doubtful. vanished theories compose the strata of many forgotten books..."
MULTIPLICITY
The multiplicity of techniques and ideas applied to energies, motions, kinetics: (1) dynamical space (no fixed points, no centers of attention or activity) (2) vectors = slides of all parameters over time / different timings, they make together a new form, combined in many forms they make a piece or work, and so on...
THE ALGORITHMIC
The algorithmic as the site to test out hypotheses, environmentally related, not like imposing or representing but bringing out specificities, related issues (fields) -- complexity/entropy/etc.. use this as a creative force and not negate this out of fear (like many of the cyberneticians and bucky fuller), let's built small interacting machines that create interesting complex models, that act on a larger scale than we know of today...
