Neo Neo by The Society of Algorithm
As we have arrived at a point of turning, away from the up to now worst phase of capitalism often refered to as postindustrial neoliberalism, and away from the height of the virus-like and mostly rhetorical but hollow kitch, copy and repetition culture aesthetics, we call here neo-new-age.
The first tendency is responsible for a blunt favoritism, mercantillism, and egoism, leading to dependent artists infested by the choice to be pragmatic, conformistic, and perspectiveless. They lock themselves in, and follow the varying demands of schools, state commissions, curators, collectors, festival directors, to produce the expected and normal. Afterwards to be evaluated by them in selections and competitions. This creates an art outside the creative process. In that light, all obvious decorations are vain: like artist phd's, nominations and awards, work commissions, residencies, ...
The second tendency is responsible for a comfortable stand still, halting innovation within the consecutive popular, moralistic-political, and 'nature' turns. This was realized through the same system of subsidized overproduction of thematic festivals, workshops and residencies, ... Each of the stone dead postmodernist corrections proved to be next-to-the-point, but relevant for the neutralization of experiment and innovation at the basis of creativity itself. But the system does not explicitly negate dissent, it only avoids it with virtuosity, by not addressing/selecting it, strengthened by the free choice and consent of the remaining participants.
Both lead to the current state of the arts, with a growing number of "artists without works", while the curators, collectors and directors, run the bazar with their sadly broken imitation toys. A culture of self-destruction, resembling more and more another 2010th series of the X-files, all nonsense included. But heavily documented in uncountable similar databases, while an army of bloggers taps away producing metametameta texts, without ever being read.
We argue for an ecological and environmentally different awareness. One that promises a subjective negation of the previously mentioned tendencies, and of a different nature that can only be radical and subversive, a-historical and collective. Aesthetically that would mean the induction of a contradictive action: one that is both disruptive and dissipative. And deregulating the automatically applied objective rules around us.
Like OULIPO's solution, in which the analytical (to develop further possibilities implicit in former works), and synthetical (to create radically new possibilities, in order to change forms and norms) meet, we consider the latter more important.
From now on the Society of Algorithm will concentrate on the collaborative building up of an an ecological media art that tends to induce subversive principles and actions into culture and society, pushing it out of its current death-drive.
The first projects deal with the disassembling of performance itself to rebuild it from zero. Also we will try to develop a new notion of time, by the technological implementation of an ecological-environmental time. Both function as fundamental parameters of a socio-cultural method to generate new experimental artefacts, subjectively collective, and requiring a different evaluation. This is our first attempt to counter the two tendencies dangerously surrounding us, and here after named "neo neo",
